Interior CS Fred Matiangi has dismissed claims that the government withdrew the security of Deputy President William Ruto’s security.
Appearing before the National Assembly’s Departmental Committee on Administration and National Security, Matiangi clarified that the DP’s security was rearranged and not withdrawn.
“There was no removal of the security personal of the DP, it was a rearrangement. The Inspector-General consulted within the structures of the security sector before making the changes, it was not a matter of win-score,” the CS said.
He further revealed that William Ruto is one of the most protected no.2 in the history of the country with 257 police officers at his disposal.

The officers include; 121 APs and Prisons Officers guarding the DP’s official residence and his private property. Ruto also has 74 officers from the Presidential Escort Unit, 6 specialists from DCI and 5 drivers from GSU.
In comparison former Vice Presidents Wamalwa Kijana and Moody Awori only had 22 police officers at their disposal. ODM leader Raila Odinga is protected by 57 police officers while Kalonzo Musyoka ( a former VP in the Kibaki administration) has 26.
The DP’s camp accused the government of playing politics with the security of the second in command after GSU officers protecting the DP’s residences were withdrawn and replaced with APs.
However, Ruto has downplayed this change in security, saying he will work with anyone fronted to him including G4s officials.
